Tacky Religious Iconography……My Dirty Little Secret

OK here and now I’m going to reveal one of my guiltiest, dirtiest little secrets, not even my family really grasps the full meaning of this obsession ! It’s a little sick and rather perverse really but I have a massive addiction to religious iconography. Yep you did read that correctly!

The weirdest part of that ? I’m not religious! Yep not a bit. Dont get me wrong I was raised by a Father and Mother who did all the right things I went to a religious all girls school, my father was raised a good catholic and my Mum certainly never had anything against religion. But for me I just don’t buy into it.

But I kind of wish I was religious ! Yes I know its strange but I do, I love religious iconography, I love the feeling you get when u enter a giant cathedral, I even like the hymns but only when they are in latin and I don’t have to hear the bullshit contained within them.

But truly I love it and the tackier the better. I’m pretty sure it all started when I was little maybe 4 or so and my Uncle John he was my favourite uncle ( he was a strict Italian catholic) gave me a miniature statue of the Vatican that lit up from inside. I loved it, I didn’t even know what the Vatican was but that little statue made me smile every time it lit up.

I have been on a quest to find a Virgin Mary nightlight for years and I love the saint candles, Yes its weird and I don’t really get it myself ! I am even into watching bizarre religious shows ! I love the ones with people who are Stigmata and the statues that cry real tears. WHY ? I don’t know !

I love the people who have saved food items that have images of Jesus and Mary on them too. I find it all completely fascinating ! Its tragic and weird I know ! But I know I’m not alone in this obsession and I know it’s not just people who are religious who love it either ! So for you people like me who love it or for the people who just find it all totally bizarre I have included a slideshow of pictures for your amusement ! ūüėČ

Hope you like the pics this is my Easter gift to everyone hahahahaha

Day 1- Song 1 ……..30 Day Music Challenge

Ok so here goes my first song choice for the 30 day challenge! I think this may be the hardest as I have at least 20 different songs that I love to the point of ridiculous ! How do you separate those choices ? How do you pick just one ? I don’t know really so I decided to go with a song that I consider a classic that I have loved for as long as I can remember I hope you all love it !

I should add here that the reason behind this song choice was that it was played at my yr 12 graduation and it summed up my feelings at the time, it makes me remember times with people who were so special to me, a time that was confusing and difficult and scary and a time that was full of promise. It all seems like such a long time ago now ! And I lost a dear friend not long after high school finished so Natalie this ones for you babe ! Love you forever and a day ! xoxox

Teriyaki Chicken Stir Fry with Hokkien Noodles- Recipe

Ok so I made this steaming plate of delicious last night and I just have to share! I cook everyday and as much as I would love to cook from scratch all the time, sometimes as a working mum I just don’t have the time. But this recipe is so quick and easy I will definitely be adding it to my weekly cooking line up. I got amazing compliments on this dish so I hope you all enjoy it as my family did !

Ingredients…Teriyaki Sauce:

1/4 cup Soy Sauce

1 cup water

1/2 tsp fresh grated Ginger

3 tbsps of brown sugar

2 cloves of minced garlic

1/2 teaspoon of dried chilli flakes

2 tbsps of cornflour

1/4 cup of cold water

Method….Teriyaki Sauce:

Combine, soy sauce, water, brown sugar, garlic, ginger and chilli in a saucepan and bring it up to boil, stir constantly then turn to a simmer.

Add cornstarch to cold water and mix until completely combined, then add this mix to the saucepan and stir until combined and then keep stirring till sauce thickens.

1 cup of chopped broccoli

1/2 a red capsicum

1 small tin of baby corn (use fresh if u can get it)

1 cup snow peas

2 medium carrots Julienne

2 spring onions finely sliced

1/2 cup bean spouts

250g of finely diced chicken breast (or tofu or if your vegetarian) Also you can use beef or pork its al about what you like !

1 packet thin hokkien noodles

(optionally add sliced bamboo shoots and water chestnuts if you like the flavour, its can be a strong taste so leave it out if you’re not sure)¬†

I also add one small chilli finely diced with the seeds removed for extra kick but if you’re not a chill fan leave it out.¬†

Firstly I blanch all my veggies with boiling water for a few minutes to soften them a little bit.

Fry all your chicken in the wok (you can use a fry pan if you don’t have a wok) I use non stick so I don’t have to use oil but if u do use oil, Peanut oil is really good !

I remove my chicken once its all cooked and set it aside so it doesn’t dry out or get tough.

Put all your veggies in the wok and stir them over a high heat tossing the around so they don’t burn. ( leave out the snow peas till the end)

While they are cooking put the hokkien noodles in a pot and pour boiling water over the top and leave to sit for about 3 mins to soften and separate.

Now your ready to put it all together ! Add the chicken to the wok with the veggies and stirfry for about a minute.

Drain the hot water off the noodles and then add them to the wok too.

Finally add the teriyaki sauce and the snow peas to the wok and stir fry over a low heat for approx two to three minutes.

Thats it all done, serve it up in a BIG dish and enjoy ! Its delicious easy and filling and best of all its super healthy !

Escape – Review

Escape is one of the best non fiction books I have read in a long time. Carolyn’s heart wrenching story is both heroic and empowering. Escape tells the story of Carolyn Jessop a young woman raised in the radical Fundamentalist Church of the Latter day Saints (FLDS) a group that splintered off from the Mormon church in the early 1900’s.

A group dedicated to the practice of Polygamy. Raised with almost no contact with the ‚Äúoutside‚ÄĚ world Carolyn knows no life beyond the boundaries of her church‚Äôs community in isolated¬†Hilldale¬†a tiny town on the very outskirts of¬†Utah. AT first life is fairly idyllic for Carolyn growing up she goes to school and believes she will have an education but all her hopes are dashed when Warren Jeffs takes over as Prophet to the FLDS.

Her entire view of the world is shaped by the teachings of her Prophet a man who himself boasts over 15 wives and over 60 children. Her only choice in life is to marry and become an obedient wife. Warren teaches his followers to “keep sweet” and be obedient. He encourages children to be married as young as eight years old. He has his sights set on Carolyn and he wont stop until he sees her firmly in the grasp of a good Mormon man.

But Carolyn wants more, an education, to be in a monogamous relationship and not to have to share her children with multiple other wives. At the age of eighteen she is married to a man nearly three times her age. After her marriage she gives birth to eight children in 12 years and with each year that passes her situation only gets worse.

She decides that to fulfil her life dreams and protect the lives of her children she must escape the compound where she has lived her whole life and make a life for herself in the outside world. Carolyn’s story is truly inspirational.

Carolyns story is shocking and at times terribly tragic yet she tells the tale with very little self pity. It is all presented in way that will make you gasp, shake you head and wonder how this is still allowed to keep happening to these women.

At times chilling this book will leave all readers feeling a great sense of empowerment just by having read the story. I was floored by her honesty, her sense of self at such a young age and her unwavering determination to save her children from the same fate she suffered. Carolyn is a woman who many will look up too. While many of us will never understand this lifestyle Carolyn has given us a rare glimpse that may help people to understand the struggle these women face every day.

The sad truth of it is that so many women face this terrible life everyday. More and more women have been subjected to this awful practice in the years since Carolyn fled the FLDS. But there is groups to help these women fight for their rights and to gain control of their lives. I have included information here if people wish to read more about this startling lifestyle.

This book is a definite must read!
